A Brief Note On Culture And Parenting Essay - 1698 Words
Michael Ibiwoye. CULTURE AND PARENTING ââ¬Å"Mommy I wonââ¬â¢t do it againâ⬠I stuttered loudly. I really didnââ¬â¢t know how serious I was about that promise, but my body definitely knew it didnââ¬â¢t want to receive any form of whipping again. That was the first time of getting whipped by my mom, and I was only four years old. I remember wishing death upon myself, with every stroke of my fatherââ¬â¢s belt on my body. What was I thinking when I went to the bathroom on the front porch of the house? I was probably thinking I could get away with it since I was just four, or I was not thinking at all. As young adults we can look back at our childhood and laugh about the smacks and punishments we got but unfortunately, some children out there are treated worse than we were treated. Some parents are ignorant to the fact that the parenting styles in which the child was nurtured affects the childââ¬â¢s communication and development. As proposed by Baumrind (1971) the main types of parenting styles are authoritarian, authoritative and permissive, while Arderââ¬â¢s article titled ââ¬Å"Parenting Styles and Discipline Methods among Different Ethnic Groupsâ⬠and Fontes and Lisa Aronsonââ¬â¢s article, titled ââ¬Å"Child discipline and Physical abuse in Immigrant Latino Families: Reducing Violence and Misunderstandingâ⬠suggests that there are other factors like culture that can also affect parenting styles. Learning about the different parenting styles shows how culture is equally important in the way children are nurtured. Parenting styles vary between families and c ultures; each having different ways of raising their children. Although parenting differs amongst cultures but the in western culture, the variations of parenting styles fall solely on the styles proposed by Baumrind.
